August in Madrid is not just heat and quiet streets: in the historic neighbourhoods of the city centre, Madrid transforms itself with three festivals that bring together tradition, music, gastronomy and neighbourhood life. These are the Fiestas of San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and La Paloma, considered the most “castizo” (traditional Madrid) soul of the summer.

The Fiestas of San Cayetano are a popular and religious celebration that opens the trilogy of traditional August festivals in Madrid, followed by those of San Lorenzo and the Virgin of La Paloma. They take place around 7 August in the Embajadores and La Latina neighbourhoods, where devotion to the saint blends with local joy and Madrid tradition.

The Fiestas of San Lorenzo are the most important patron saint celebrations in the city of Huesca (Aragon, Spain). They honour Saint Lawrence, a Roman martyr and local patron saint, with a series of religious, cultural and festive events that attract tens of thousands of visitors every August. They are one of the most emblematic popular festivals of the Spanish summer and are declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest.

In addition to their religious dimension, the festivities bring a major economic and social boost to the city, generating more than 15 million euros in tourism activity. They promote Aragonese culture through traditional dances (jotas), costumes and local gastronomy such as roast lamb (ternasco) and migas. With an organisation focused on sustainability and inclusion, they remain a national festive landmark and a source of pride for Huesca.

The Fiestas of La Paloma are a popular celebration held every August in Madrid’s La Latina neighbourhood in honour of the Virgin of La Paloma. They are one of the most iconic street festivals in Madrid, where religious devotion blends with a lively traditional atmosphere.

La Paloma closes the cycle of central Madrid festivals —after San Cayetano and San Lorenzo— and is deeply connected to the city’s identity. Its spirit was immortalised in the zarzuela La verbena de la Paloma, a symbol of traditional Madrid that still defines the essence of these festivities.
