Activities to do in Málaga

Alcazaba

The Alcazaba is one of the most well-preserved Arab fortresses in Spain. It was built in the 11th century as a defensive stronghold against enemies. The influence of Arab domination is particularly evident in its architecture and gardens, showcasing the mastery of Arab craftsmen in manipulating light and shadow in interior spaces. The Arab style is characterized by highly detailed decorations. Additionally, one can observe multiple Roman influences, such as Roman columns present beneath the Arab arches. There are many stairs with uneven surfaces, so it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes. Every Sunday, it is possible to access the fortress for free after 2:00 PM.

Mount Gibralfaro and Málaga Castle

The Castillo de Gibralfaro is located on Mount Gibralfaro. It offers an overview of the region’s history as well as the most beautiful view of Málaga and the Mediterranean Sea. Mount Gibralfaro is covered with a dense forest of pine and eucalyptus trees. Being closely tied to the city’s history, it is represented in the emblems and flags of the city of Málaga and the province. There are also several trails on Mount Gibralfaro that allow us to enjoy wonderful views of the city. These trails start in the northern part of the mountain, near the Alcazaba tunnel. If you want to visit the Alcazaba on the same day, you can purchase a combined ticket for both sites at a discounted rate. The entrance fee for both monuments is 5.50 euros. The hike through Mount Gibralfaro takes about two hours round trip. It is not a very difficult path, making it suitable for all ages. As always, it is recommended to wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and to bring water and something to eat.

Málaga Cathedral

The cathedral is an unmissable landmark in the city. Its rich history, unique architecture, and artworks make it one of the most magical places in Málaga. The cathedral’s long history originates from the Great Mosque on which it was built. As a result of various phases and styles of construction, it stands as a majestic Renaissance-Baroque cathedral with Gothic elements. Inside, visitors can admire an organ built in 1871 by Julián de la Orden. Opening hours may vary depending on the day and season. Therefore, it is advisable to check the official website well in advance.

Atarazanas Market

To find fresh products and culinary specialties, the city boasts a historic market. The main entrance is an Arabic-style gate, which was part of the ancient city wall from the Arab era. The building is divided into three sections: one for fresh fruits and vegetables, another for fish, and the last for meat. The market is open from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. On Mondays, there is no fresh fish, so the fish section remains closed.

Carmen Thyssen Museum

Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza, born in Scheveningen, came from a family with an impressive collection of artworks. His widow, Carmen Cervera, donated the collection to the city of Málaga, and part of it can be seen at the Carmen Thyssen Museum. The museum was developed by RG Arquitectos Asociados around the Palacio de Villalón, a 16th-century Baroque building that was partially reconstructed for the occasion. The exhibition spaces, consisting of three rooms for the permanent collection and two for temporary exhibitions, were newly constructed next to the palace, which houses the Old Masters collection. Overall, the museum covers 7,147 square meters, of which 5,185 can be used for displaying artworks. Inaugurated in 2011, the museum offers the opportunity to admire the diversity of Spanish art from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The single ticket is valid for visiting the entire museum (permanent collection and temporary exhibitions) and includes an audio guide service.
